It's incredible to think this remarkable and timeless, German design was developed in 1937. In 1940, the British used captured Jerycan's in preference to their own clumsy, leaking 'Flimsy'. By 1941 this German design was being mass produced by the Allies in vast quantities. Never mind the Jerycan holds more fuel, is more robust, can be carried comfortably by one or two people, has a unique cam action closure, incorporates a special breathing device in the neck to ensure smooth pouring etc etc - the Jerrycan just looks better.
